The impact of Mental health, Musculoskeletal conditions, Osteoarthritis on an ageing population.
Our director, Ian Wenman, recently presented to a conference of leading OT’s and Physios and focused on the impact of Mental health, Musculoskeletal conditions, Osteoarthritis and the requirements of an increasingly aged population.
A lot has been written on the impact of an aging population, but not many people have talked about the possibility of using clinical assistance combined with adopting technical developments to maintain and aid mobility. In addition, physical disabilities can have a detrimental effect on mental health and visa versa which can often go unreported and be underestimated.
In a recent article by the Institute for Fiscal Studies,https://www.ifs.org.uk/publications/9123, the real reduction in social care funding is analysed and not surprisingly, there is less money to support far more people, so the big question is what can we do? In Ian’s presentation he explored what Wenmans do to help people maintain their independence through mobility and the positive impact this can have on people with musculoskeletal conditions. Not only this, Ian talked about the importance of companionship to help in rehabilitation and the different roles professionals have in delivering this. Wenmans have worked with many professionals and have seen the impact this approach can have so maybe there is another way to deliver the care our elderly population need.
