Daily Living Aids for Hearing Loss

Hearing loss can make everyday things like answering the phone, hearing the doorbell or smoke alarm, and following conversation much harder, which can affect confidence and safety at home. A range of products can help make daily life easier by making important sounds louder, more visible, or easier to feel.

For hearing loss information and support, speak to your healthcare professionals and visit the NHS website. Our qualified trusted assessors are also here to support you and your care team every step of the way, so please call us on 01926 624432.

We stock or can source most, if not all, of the equipment and aids below, but can’t include everything on our website, so please contact us if you’d like to know more about any of them. We also offer a free home assessment with one of our qualified Warwick-based team.

Communication and Listening Aids

Amplified telephones are big button phones with adjustable volume and tone, making calls easier to hear and dial. Personal listening amplifiers are small portable devices with headphones, useful for one-to-one conversation or when you’re out and about. TV listening devices and headsets let you hear the television clearly at a comfortable volume without turning it up for everyone else, and portable induction loop systems work with hearing aids that have a telecoil setting to cut out background noise.

Alerting and Safety Products

Flashing or vibrating doorbells alert you visually or through a pager when someone is at the door. Flashing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms give a strong visual alert, and sometimes a vibrating pillow pad, alongside the standard alarm sound. Vibrating alarm clocks wake you with a pad under the pillow or mattress rather than relying on sound alone, and personal alarms, worn as a pendant or wristband, give reassurance that help is on hand if you have a fall or feel unwell.

Assistive Technology

Captioned telephones show a text version of what the other person is saying on a screen as you talk. Speech-to-text apps turn spoken conversation into text in real time on a phone or tablet, which is helpful for appointments or family visits. Smart home visual alert systems flash a light or send a phone notification for the doorbell, phone or smoke alarm.

Home Adaptations

Good task and ambient lighting around the home makes it easier to lip-read and follow facial expressions in conversation, and visual doorbell and intercom systems fitted around the home mean you never miss a visitor.

Everyone’s hearing loss is different, so the right combination of products will depend on your own situation and any hearing aids or cochlear implants you already use. Our trusted assessor team are happy to talk through what would help most. Find out more about Wenman Healthcare, or browse our full range of products in the shop.
