Mobility and Daily Living Aids for Stroke Recovery

Individuals recovering from a stroke may experience a variety of physical and cognitive challenges, such as difficulty with mobility, speech, coordination, and memory. There is a wide range of equipment available which is designed to support independence, improve functionality, and ensure safety for those recovering from a stroke.

For stroke and recovery information, speak to your healthcare professionals and visit the NHS website. Our qualified trusted assessors are also here to support you and your care team every step of the way, so please call us on 01926 624432.

Many of the products below are available to buy or through our Warwickshire-wide mobility equipment hire service, including wheelchair hire for stroke patients, as well as other stroke and disability equipment hire. This can help to facilitate hospital discharge, enable you to try equipment before committing to a purchase, or provide short-term support while you recover. We also offer a free home assessment with one of our qualified Warwick-based team to help you choose what’s right for you.

Mobility Aids

Stroke survivors often experience weakness or paralysis on one side (hemiparesis), so the right walking aid or wheelchair for stroke patients makes a real difference to safety and confidence. Rollators and quad canes offer extra stability for those able to walk with support, while a stroke wheelchair, whether lightweight, electric, or designed for one-handed use, suits more severe mobility impairments. Transfer boards and vehicle adaptations such as hand controls help with safe moves between chair, bed and car.

Shop our Walking Aids, Wheelchairs, Specialist Wheelchairs, Powerchairs and Vehicle Adaptations ranges, including Person Hoists and Push Pull Hand Controls. Many of these are also available to hire rather than buy.

Exercise and Rehabilitation Devices

Hand grippers, therapy balls, pedal exercisers and resistance bands all help rebuild strength and coordination after a stroke, while balance boards support safe, controlled practice of balance and core strength.

Shop Gel Therapy Balls, or browse our Daily Living Aids range for more rehabilitation aids.

Cognitive and Speech Rehabilitation Tools

Speech therapy apps, memory aids and voice-activated assistants such as Alexa or Google Home can help with relearning speech and managing memory, while picture-based communication boards support those experiencing aphasia.

Adaptive Daily Living Aids

Everyday tasks like eating, dressing and grooming can become difficult with limited use of one hand or reduced dexterity, which is where one-handed daily living aids come in. One-handed utensils, button and zipper aids, long-handled dressing aids and adapted toiletries are among the daily living aids after stroke that help restore independence with these routines.

Shop our Daily Living Aids range, including Easy Grip Cutlery, the Big Grip Button Hook and Elastic Shoelaces.

Home Modifications and Safety Products

Grab rails fitted near the toilet, bath and shower, non-slip mats, raised toilet seats and shower chairs reduce the risk of falls in the bathroom during stroke recovery. Bed rails and other home adaptations for stroke patients add further safety, making it easier to set up genuinely practical equipment for stroke recovery at home.

Shop our Home Adaptations and Bathing ranges, including Grab Rails, a Fold Away Grab Rail, Raised Toilet Seat, Shower Stool, Mobility Bed Rail, Security Bathtub Pole, Toilet Surround and Wet Room solutions.

Seating and Riser Recliner Chairs

Getting up from a chair can be one of the hardest daily movements after a stroke, especially with weakness on one side. A riser recliner chair gently lifts you to a standing position and supports good posture while seated, reducing strain for you and anyone helping you.

Shop our Seating range, including riser recliner chairs, or speak to our Trusted Assessors about the right size and controls.

Orthotic and Supportive Devices

AFOs (ankle-foot orthoses) help stabilise the ankle and reduce foot drop, improving gait for those with leg weakness, while splints, braces and shoulder slings help prevent stiffness and support a weakened or paralysed arm.

Assistive Technology

Voice-activated assistants and smart home automation systems to control lights, heating and doors by voice or smartphone can restore a good deal of independence, while adaptive phones with large buttons or one-touch dialling make communication easier.

Compression Garments

Compression stockings or gloves help reduce swelling and improve circulation, particularly where reduced mobility leads to fluid retention in the legs or arms.

Eating and Drinking Aids

Weighted utensils help with tremors or reduced coordination, while non-spill cups and adaptive plates with high sides or non-slip bases support independent eating and drinking.

Shop the Henrocup non-spill cup, part of our wider Daily Living Aids range.

Emotional and Mental Support Tools

Music therapy can aid emotional regulation and rehabilitation, particularly for those with speech difficulties, while weighted blankets can help with comfort, anxiety and sleep quality after a stroke.

Repairs, Modifications & Servicing

Stroke recovery needs often change over time, and existing equipment doesn’t always need replacing. For example, many wheelchairs can be adapted with extra accessories, and powered wheelchairs can often be reprogrammed or have their controls adjusted to suit changing strength, grip or coordination. Our team also offer regular servicing to keep equipment safe and reliable.

Shop Wheelchair Accessories and Wheelchair Powerpacks, or see our repair, modification & servicing team for adjustments, adaptations and powerchair programming.

Using a combination of these products can help enhance rehabilitation outcomes, support independence in daily tasks, and reduce the physical and emotional challenges associated with stroke recovery. Find out more about Wenman Healthcare, or browse our full range in the shop.
