Mobility and Daily Living Aids for Dementia

Dementia can affect memory, thinking and orientation and, as it progresses, mobility and balance too. The right equipment can help people living with dementia stay safe, comfortable and as independent as possible at home, while also making day-to-day care easier for family members and carers.

For dementia information and support, speak to your healthcare professionals and visit the NHS website. Our qualified trusted assessors are also here to support you, your family and your care team every step of the way, so please call us on 01926 624432.

Many of the products below are available to buy or through our Warwickshire-wide mobility equipment hire service. Hire can help to facilitate hospital discharge, enable you to try equipment before committing to a purchase, or provide support as needs change. We also offer a free home assessment with one of our qualified Warwick-based team to help you choose what’s right for you.

Mobility Aids

Walking and balance can become less steady as dementia progresses, which increases the risk of falls. Rollators with seats and brakes give stability and somewhere to rest, while a folding walking stick suits those who need lighter support. For longer distances or later stages, a comfortable wheelchair makes outings easier, and specialist tilt-in-space wheelchairs offer extra postural support and comfort.

Shop our Walking Aids, Wheelchairs and Specialist Wheelchairs ranges, including the Motion 2.1, Folding Walking Stick, Ergo 3 Transit and Invacare Rea Azalea. Many of these are also available to hire rather than buy.

Transfers and Moving Safely

Getting in and out of bed, chairs or the bath can become harder over time, both for the person living with dementia and for those helping them. Person hoists allow carers to move someone safely and with dignity, and a homelift offers a safe alternative to the stairs in a multi-storey home.

Shop Person Hoists and the Homelift, part of our Home Adaptations range.

Home Modifications and Safety Products

Confusion and reduced balance increase the risk of falls around the home, especially in the bathroom and near the bed. Well-placed grab rails, a security pole and bed rails provide something steady to hold, while non-slip surfaces and good lighting reduce the risk of trips, particularly at night.

Shop our Home Adaptations range, including Grab Rails, a Fold Away Grab Rail, the Security Bathtub Pole and the Mobility Bed Rail.

Bathroom and Hygiene Aids

Bathing can become stressful for someone living with dementia. Shower stools and shower commode chairs provide a secure seat, and a level-access wet room removes the need to step over the side of a bath, making personal care calmer and safer for everyone.

Shop our Bathing range, including the Contour Shower Stool, the Ocean Dual VIP Ergo and Wet Room solutions.

Seating and Riser Recliner Chairs

Comfortable, supportive seating matters for anyone who spends much of the day sitting. A riser recliner chair helps with standing up and sitting down safely, while specialist seating supports posture and comfort for those with more advanced needs.

Shop our Seating range, including Riser Recliners and Specialist Seating such as the Hydrotilt, or speak to our Trusted Assessors about the right size and controls.

Beds, Pressure Care and Comfort

For those who are less mobile or spending more time in bed, a profiling bed makes care easier and safer, while pressure-relief mattresses and cushions help to prevent pressure sores. Weighted blankets can also help with comfort, anxiety and sleep for some people living with dementia.

Shop our Beds, Mattresses and Pressure Cushions ranges, including the Medley Ergo bed, Softform Premier Mattress, Pressure-Tex Cushion and EZ Swivel Overbed Table.

Daily Living and Eating Aids

Simple, easy-to-use aids help people living with dementia keep doing everyday tasks for themselves, which supports confidence and dignity. Easy grip cutlery and non-spill cups make mealtimes easier, and button hooks help with dressing.

Shop our Daily Living Aids range, including Easy Grip Cutlery, the Henrocup non-spill cup, the Big Grip Button Hook and the Handy Handle.

Memory, Communication and Assistive Technology

Clocks that show the day, date and time of day, large-button phones with photo dialling, pill reminders and voice-activated assistants such as Alexa or Google Home can all help reduce confusion and keep people connected. Door and bed-exit sensors and wearable alarms can also alert carers if someone wanders or has a fall.

Repairs, Modifications & Servicing

Needs change as dementia progresses, and existing equipment doesn’t always need replacing. Wheelchairs can often be adapted with extra accessories or postural supports, and our team can adjust and service equipment to keep it safe, comfortable and reliable.

Shop Wheelchair Accessories and Wheelchair Adaptations, or see our repair, modification & servicing team for adjustments and adaptations.

Using a combination of these products can help create a safer, more supportive home for someone living with dementia, while easing the day-to-day demands on family and carers. Find out more about Wenman Healthcare, or browse our full range of products in the shop.
